Any remaining credit calculated on Schedule 11 by a student can be transferred to one of the following individuals. Only one person can claim this transfer from the student. It does not need to be the same person from year to year.
The student cannot transfer any amount they carried forward in a previous year. The maximum amount they are allowed to transfer is $5,000 less the amount they needed to use to reduce their own tax owing.

Ensure you have received the T2202 certificate from your educational institution in Canada, or the TL11A, TL11C or TL11D from a school in another country.
If your child has eligible tuition fees, they’ll want to file a return to calculate their tuition tax credit. The tuition tax credit may not be needed on their return in the year, but the return still must be filed so that the tuition tax credit can either be carried forward or transferred to you.
You have to first claim your current year’s federal tuition fees and any unused tuition, education, and textbook amounts carried forward from previous years on your Income Tax and Benefit Return, even if someone else paid your fees.

If you do not qualify for the education amount, you must claim all of your grants, scholarships and bursaries as income except for $500 which is tax exempt.
