This goes for almost all Talents, when grinding for Taming XP only go up to a Rare Talent. After You get the pet to a Rare Talent use the Talent Extractor on the pet to remove the Talent, then rinse and repeat.

Right-clicking a summoned Pet with a Pet Item will apply that item to the pet. When applied, the Pet Item will be consumed and its benefits can be seen in the Pets Menu underneath the last perk of the pet. Once a Pet Item is applied it cannot be removed, only replaced by another Pet Item. Pets can only have a single item applied at a time.
