If you are experiencing a medical emergency, dial 911 or go to your nearest hospital emergency department. If you are unsure whether it is an emergency, visit your closest hospital emergency department or check Health Connect Ontario to call or chat online with a registered nurse.
Emergency rooms provide treatment of severe illnesses and life-threatening injuries 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you need urgent medical attention for serious illness or injury, visit an ER. A doctor or nurse will assess your condition and decide on a course of treatment.
Triage and registration. All patients report to the Triage Reception Desk when they arrive at the Emergency Department. (Triage means deciding who must be seen first. This is done by the severity of illness or injury, not the order in which patients arrive.)
