    — J. K. Rowling speaking upon this brand new series

    Pre-production and development

"We spent some real time with J.K. and her team. Both sides are just thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great, and we couldn't be more excited about what's ahead. We can't wait to share a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max." — David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery Roughly in 2019, Warner Bros. approached TV writers to brainstorm ideas in the Harry Potter universe. Some of the ideas included prequels about the generation of wizards that included James Potter I and Lily J. Potter. Another idea looked at a different school for young wizards. All ideas were not presented to the author, because she held enormous control of the franchise. On 25 January 2021, The Hollywood Reporter reported in an exclusive story that executives at Warner Bros. were looking for potential writers for a TV series. However, both Max and Warner Bros. released a statement saying that there were "no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform". In the same year, after David Zaslav became CEO of the new company Warner Bros. Discovery, he travelled to London to meet the author J. K. Rowling to discuss new projects in the franchise. In December 2022, the chairwoman of Warner Bros. Television, Channing Dungey, shared her plans for a possible expansion of the Wizarding World franchise. In March 2023, Bloomberg reported that Warner Bros. were closing in a deal with J. K. Rowling for an adaptation, with her maintaining a degree of creative development without serving as a primary creator or showrunner. It was officially announced by HBO on 12 April 2023. It was later stated that it will be a faithful adaptation of the books. In October 2023, David Yates confirmed he will not participate in the production of the show. News site Deadline Hollywood exclusively reported that in the week of 15-19 January 2024, multiple writers pitched their ideas with opportunity to contribute to the script, independently written or in a group setting. The writers that pitched included, Martha Hillier, Kathleen Jordan, Tom Moran, and Michael Lesslier. The process was described as in its very nascent stages. In January 2024, Channing Dungey, chairwoman of Warner Bros. Television, said that the Harry Potter television series is a high priority for the company. The first step of the project would be a search for the showrunner followed by casting; he said the trickiest thing would be book 1 and 2, since the kids would be around 11 or 12. By 1 February 2024, the contenders for writers had been narrowed down to three options. Francesca Gardiner, a former consulting producer for the TV show Succession, is one of three finalists. The series will be executive produced by production company Brontë Film and TV, chaired by Neil Blair, and Warner Bros Television. The other two writers were revealed to be Tom Moran, who created the Amazon Prime series The Devil's Hour, and Kathleen Jordan, who executive produced the TV series Teenage Bounty Hunters, and is working on a Netflix series called The Decameron. A final writer is expected to be announced in June 2024. On 22 February, in an annual shareholders presentation, David Zaslav revealed more information on the television series. The series is expected to be released in 2026, and adapt each of the 7 books. He had visited London a few weeks prior to to meet with J. K. Rowling to discuss the show. No cast has been announced, but there will be an all-new cast separate from that of the films. Daniel Radcliffe, the actor who portrayed Harry Potter in the films, revealed he is not pursuing it in any way.
