A mixed metaphor is a figure of speech that combines two or more incompatible metaphors, leading to a confusing or illogical expression. These can occur accidentally or intentionally in writing, often resulting in a humorous or jarring effect.
Mixed metaphors can have a significant impact on communication: Confusion: A conflict of metaphors might lead the audience to misunderstand the intended meaning of the speech, because the two incompatible elements create an unclear message.
The metaphors satisfy the two basic conditions for mixed metaphor: (1) they occur in textual adjacency, i.e. within a single metaphor cluster, and (2) they do not (for the most part) share any imagistic ontology or any direct inferential entailments between them.
