Music therapy is moving from a social-science model focusing on overall health and well-being towards a neuroscience model focusing on specific elements of music and its effect on sensorimotor, language and cognitive functions. Jun 1, 2024 · Music has the potential to act on the circuitry of the brain involved in the autonomic dysregulation associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We conducted a systematic review to identify studies examining the effects of music interventions on PTSD symptoms in adults.
The current narrative review describes the practice of music therapy and presents a theoretically-informed assessment and model of music therapy as a tool for addressing symptoms of PTSD. The review also presents key empirical studies that support the theoretical assessment.
