May 13, 2022 · Fit the cut carpet to the stair. Staple the carpet to the bottom riser, working the nose of the stapler in between the fibers, so that fiber doesn’t get caught under the staple and create a dimple in the carpet. If you do get a fiber caught, gently pull it out using a flat-head screwdriver. Fasten the carpet underneath the nosing of the tread ...

Sep 7, 2023 · Install Runner Carpet. Cut a strip of double-sided tape slightly shorter than the width of the rug. Press the tape along the top edge of the riser of the first tread, placing it just under the nose. Line up the top edge of the runner rug with the tape and press firmly. Use the staple gun to staple the rug in place.
- Before you get started installing your carpet, you first need to determine the look you want in your home. There are two ways of installing carpet on stairs: the Hollywood method and the waterfall method.
- Next up: Time to choose a carpet. Of all of the options available to you, a machine-hemmed, prefabricated stair runner is the most convenient choice for easy installation.
- Whether you plan to pick up a runner that is ready to go, or craft something totally custom, you’ll first need to collect all your necessary measurements.
- Prepare your stairs for carpet installation by installing tack strips, thin pieces of wood resembling yardsticks with tacks pointing upward. These will grip the carpet backing and hold it in place.
- Measure the Stairs. Measure the depth of one of the stair treads (the steps) and count the number of treads. Measure the height of one of the stair risers (the vertical part) and count the number of risers.
- Calculate the Length of Runner. Multiple the number of stair treads by the tread depth. Multiply the number of stair risers by the riser height. Add the two totals.
- Decide on the Runner Width. Stair runner width is more flexible. Leave at least 2 inches of width on each side. So, a staircase with 36-inch treads should have a runner that's around 32 inches wide or less.
- Cut the Carpet Padding. With scissors, cut one piece of padding that is 2 inches narrower than the stair runner and 3 inches deeper than each tread. Snip off two corners on one of the long sides at 45-degree angles.
Make sure that the carpet is centred and even on the step. Ensure that the rest of the carpet runs over staircase nosing: As you move down each step, ensure that the rest of the carpet runs over the staircase nosing. The nosing is the edge of the stair that overhangs the riser. Slowly move down each step, making sure to press firmly to avoid ...
Staple each edge of the runner 2 inches above bottom of riser. (For upholstered installation, staple edges to riser, then staple runner to underside of nosing every 3 inches.) Repeat Steps 3 and 4 up to last riser. At top of last riser, cut runner tight to the underside of the nosing or molding.
