How do I start a virtual class?
- Whole Group Instruction. Whole group instruction is best used to introduce big ideas and concepts to students. Whether the teacher is lecturing, telling a story, or sharing a single important piece of information, it is essential that whole group instruction in virtual meetings is short and concise (no more than 15 minutes without a brain break).
- Small Group Instruction and Workshops. In small groups teachers can be more detailed in their instruction. In groups of 3-5, the virtual learning can be more conversational and discussion based.
- Guest Speakers. Technologies like Zoom, Skype, and Google Meets make it possible to invite experts to be a part of your class. Whether it’s a zookeeper, a scientist, a local author, or even one of your students’ parents, guest speakers make learning more authentic for students.

- Play a simple game. One thing that I have learned about teaching remotely is to never start on time. There is always a group of students who join 10 minutes late and will end up disrupting the flow of your lesson.
- “Would you rather” polls* Start your virtual session with a fun “would you rather” poll. These polls serve as a sponge activity and help you engage every student in your class.
- Put a hand up. If you don’t have access to poll questions, you can play a game of “put a hand up” This is one of my favorite Google Meet activities. It’s simple and fun!
Virtual morning meetings are a way to connect with our students during remote, distance learning. Use the ideas to design and deliver engaging meetings online that kids look forward to each day.
