For instance, the bottom-left quarter is SW ¼, Section 34, T1S, R2E. Not only can you describe units as ¼ sections, but you can split them as ½ sections. For example, we can identify the two left-side squares of a quarter section as W ½, Section 34, T1S, R2E.
A quarter of a section (160 acres) is created by drawing both the north-south half-section line and the east-west half-section line, breaking the section into four parts. Each part of a section can then be broken down using the same method, giving you such things as the east half of the southwest quarter of the northeast quarter of a section.
A Section is made up of 4 Quarter Sections. The Quarters in a Section are described as the North East (NE), North West (NW), South East (SE) and South West (SW) Quarters. Each Quarter Section is approximately 160 acres (65 hectares) and is described by its compass direction.
Any parcel listed as northeast, northwest, southwest, or southeast is a quarter part. A combination of aliquot parts, for example two equal quarters, can be described as half of a section. Aparcel reading north, south, east, or west is a half part.
