Nov 9, 2023 · Teach students the importance of water conservation with engaging activities and lesson plans. Promote water awareness and sustainability. Help them save water at home.
Task students with creating a water conservation awareness campaign for their school or local community. Encourage them to design posters, public service announcements, or infographics highlighting water-saving tips and facts about water conservation.
In this one-hour-long activity, students will watch a short documentary describing issues related to clean water availability, analyze water-use data and start to think about how they consume and can conserve water.
- Teach children where their water comes from. Depending on where you live, you may get your water from the ground (aquifers), from surface water (rivers), or maybe even from rainwater collection (like rural areas or the island of Bermuda).
- Look for water leaks together. What kids don’t like being a detective, so how about the activity of tracking down water waste? The Arizona Municipal Water Users Association member cities have created a great booklet on how to Find and Fix Leaks That Are Draining Your Budget.
- Explain that what goes down the drain can end up in our drinking water. Did you know that medications or toxic chemicals poured down the drain or flushed down the toilet can harm wastewater treatment facilities, pollute water supplies, and endanger wildlife?
- Go camping. Beyond the fun of the great outdoors, fresh air, and starry skies, camping is a great way to demonstrate just how little water you really need to use.
- Design Your Poster. Every action begins with knowledge. It is essential for high schoolers to acknowledge that water conservation activities can only be successful when the entire community is a part of it.
- Leak Detective. Leaks may seem insignificant, but they are silent water thieves. It is important for students to understand that water is not just lost through keeping taps on.
- The Rally of Change. All it takes is one voice to empower individuals and communities at large. For this activity, invite students from different departments to contribute towards a rally in the surrounding areas.
- Round of Rounds! Water conservation is a vast topic and with any type of conservation, it starts from home. It takes many minor and major steps to start from the cause.
