Remove the screws holding the shower control handle in place, then proceed to remove the handle itself.
Place your new trim plate over the valve. Mine came with a rubber gasket; others may call for plumber’s putty or caulk.
If appropriate for your valve, install the diverter—that is, the mechanism which directs water from the plumbing lines to your shower head.
Clip the diverter retaining ring in place if needed. As the ring in my kit seemed prone to popping out, I used some adhesive caulk to secure it.
Finally, screw in your new control handle. Installing the shower trim kit took me all of ten minutes. Removing the old trim? Well, that took me an hour. Inexplicably, it had been installed with drywall screws. Oh, the joys of home improvement!

Jul 8, 2010 · Following the instructions on the container of plumber's putty, apply the putty to the back of the escutcheon plate. Step 2 - Install the Plate. Slide the escutcheon plate up the shower arm to the wall of the shower enclosure and press the plate firmly against the wall. Hold it in place for a minute or two, applying firm, even pressure.
Sep 8, 2024 · Put the trim plate and handle back in place. Set the trim plate back over the access hole and screw it in place on both sides. If it had a layer of calk securing it around the sides, apply a new layer. Screw the shower handle back in place, turn it on to make sure it works, and remove the cloth from the drain.

Sep 25, 2024 · Then, attach the shower handle replacement and trim in the reverse order that you took them off. Caulk the wall under the rim of the escutcheon plate with acrylic caulk before you tighten it down, when it’s roughly 1/4 in. away from the wall. Leave a 1-in. gap at the bottom, then wipe off excess caulk after the plate is tightened down.
