You have a student in your office who has a fever and just threw up, but their parent won't be able to get to the school for another three hours. What do you do?
Sometimes parents have long commutes or existing schedule conflicts that prevent them from picking up their child right away after the child gets sick or injured. In these situations, school nurses need to communicate with parents and teachers and care for the student until their parents can pick them up. Your answer should demonstrate the steps you would take in response to a parent unable to pick up their child right away. It should also convey your compassion and care for your students."After getting confirmation from the parent to administer cold or flu medication, I'd help make the student as comfortable as possible. I'd do this by letting them curl up on one of the beds and giving them a blanket. I would also give them water and instruct them to try to take a nap until their parent arrives. Once they're taken care of, I'd call their teacher to let them know about the situation."
What strategies do you use to calm an upset student?
Interviewers ask this question to gauge your previous professional experience working with children who are either sick or injured and the types of calming methods you've discovered. Your answer should include a few key strategies you used depending on the student's ailments or age. It should also highlight one or more examples of how you calmed students at your previous job."At my previous job at an elementary school, I encountered a variety of age groups each day from students aged five to students aged 11. I found that it's typically helpful with younger students to compliment them on their hair or a character on their shirt. This usually helps distract them and they get excited to talk to you more about it.In other situations, it helps to let them read a book, draw or hold a stuffed animal. Older students usually don't respond to the same tactics, and instead, I give them a glass of water and have them lay down for a bit if they want, to calm down."
As the school nurse, you'd be responsible for maintaining supply inventory and making sure you have enough of each students' medications. How would you monitor your supply inventory?
This question helps interviewers determine the types of health conditions you have experience with and how well organized you are to maintain necessary medical supplies. Your answer should highlight your previous work experience, your process for conducting inventory checks and your understanding of how important it is to maintain sufficient supply inventory."At the end of each workday, I would check on inventory levels and place orders for supplies with low inventory. I would also review the amount of prescription medication available for each student with ongoing health conditions and make a note to contact parents when they need to bring another bottle or container. At my previous job, I was responsible for keeping track of prescription needs for epileptic students, students with diabetes and students with temporary injuries. Each day brings new injuries and illnesses, so I know how important it is to be proactive with supply orders."
