    If you're at max hearts, the decay is smaller than the amount they gain from eating grass outside, so if they go outside, you don't need to pet them. Petting an animal is +15 friendship points. Not petting them is -5 to -10. The higher the friendship, the less they lose. So there's not really a big buffer unfortunately.
