Jul 27, 2023 · Use these teacher-tested classroom management strategies and techniques to design and manage your own ideal classroom environment. 1. Get to know your students. Classroom management often boils down to getting to know, and build relationships with, many tiny humans. Start each year by getting to know your students.
Looking for tried and true classroom management strategies that will actually work in your classroom? Look no further. They're all here.
- Quickly Get Students’ Attention. Getting your entire class to quickly stop and listen to you is something that sounds simple, but we all know it can sometimes be a challenge to quiet a classroom full of excited kids who are buzzing about the latest movie or upcoming break.
- Add Call and Response Chants to Your Toolkit. If clapping doesn’t feel right for you, here’s another auditory cue idea to help you regain classroom control when kids have gotten too loud.
- Curb Calling Out With Blurt Buttons. We’ve all experienced those students who interrupt the class as they’re thinking aloud: “It’s cloudy outside,” or telling you about their neighbor’s three-legged cat, or asking randomly (and in the midst of direct instruction) “How many days are there until Christmas?”
- Institute Traffic Control Sticks. Do you have craft sticks? Add some bright washi tape and kids’ names, and you have a classroom management tool that can be used in various ways during the school year.
- Model ideal behavior. Make a habit of demonstrating behavior you want to see, as many studies show that modelling effectively teaches students how to act in different situations.
- Let students help establish guidelines.
- Document rules. Don’t let your mutually-respected guidelines go forgotten. Similar to handing out a syllabus, print and distribute the list of rules that the class discussion generated.
- Avoid punishing the class. Address isolated discipline problems individually instead of punishing an entire class, as the latter can hurt your relationships with students who are on-task and thereby jeopardize other classroom management efforts.
- Secret Agent Theme. Imagine your classroom as a thrilling world of spies and turn it into a secret agent adventure where students can earn special badges or ranks based on their behavior and participation.
- Virtual Travel. Transform your classroom into an exciting virtual travel experience, where students embark on a journey around the world without leaving their seats.
- Mystery Box. Engage your students with an element of mystery and excitement through the Mystery Box strategy. This strategy involves using a special box filled with small prizes or rewards that students can earn by demonstrating good behavior or achieving academic milestones.
- Class Olympics. Get ready to ignite a sense of friendly competition and teamwork in your classroom with the exhilarating Class Olympics strategy. This strategy involves organizing a class Olympics event where students can participate in a range of academic and physical challenges, earning points for their teams or themselves.
