Mar 2, 2022 · I’ve done a lot of exercises to pass and receive well and be better than others. And I want to show you today eight exercises that are great for improving your serve reception technique, where we play the ball with only one hand.
- The X Passing Drill. How it works: One player is the passer while the other provides tosses to five spots. The passer will return each tossed ball to the player tossing via a good pass.
- Ball in a Square. How it works: Players are challenged to complete a goal set of bumps into a square taped on the wall. Purpose: This drill develops consistency in the platform, from a variety of angles, to simulate in-game situations that require quick realignment and control of the passing platform.
- Platform Catch. How it works: Players perform this drill individually and attempt to bump the ball into the air and catch it in the “sweet spot” of their platform.
- Serve to Receive. How it works: One player will serve over the net on a line to a player awaiting to pass. The passer will give a good pass to the “setter” who will then catch the ball.

The proper hand position for bumps, passes, and digs is with both hands palm upward, fingers stacked on top of each other, and palms rotated 45 degrees towards your body. The thumbs should be folded over the stacked fingers, joining at the first knuckle and the ball of the thumb, creating a flat platform for passing.
