Any heat and smoke not vented up the chimney will cascade over the front of the mantel and around your TV, damaging the electronics. Gas fireplaces produce less heat than wood-burning fireplaces.

This can lead to malfunctions, shorten the lifespan of the TV's internal electronic components, and even result in picture quality degradation over time.
- Check the Temperature Before You Hang a TV Over a Fireplace. You may be planning to burn a fire while watching TV. If so, the place you'll be hanging your TV mustn't exceed the recommended temperatures noted on the unit's technical specifications.
- Test the Viewing Angle. Consider the viewing height when placing a television. Ideally, televisions should be set at the eye level of seated viewers. Still, unless you have a very low mantel, this placement probably won't be possible above a fireplace.
- Choose a Safe Method for Mounting the TV Above the Fireplace. There are several mounting methods and systems that allow you to easily place and hang flat-screen TVs above a fireplace.

Jul 6, 2024 · When hanging your TV above the fireplace, use the same basic guidelines as when determining how high to hang pictures over furniture. The professionals who hung our TV said that they typically hang them 6-8″ above the fireplace mantel. My personal preference is 5-6″ above the mantel (ours is hung at a little under 6″).
