Survival Guide: Tips for Surviving Your First Nights

By Revka, Angie Harvey, Lauren Harper, +11 more

Sons of the Forest throws you in at the deep end and refuses to hold your hand throughout the game. So, whether you're looking for ideas on what key items you want to pick up first, how to look after your basic needs, or you just to make it through the first few days, our walkthrough below will help guide you through your first few nights in Sons of the Forest.

    •Looking After Your Basic Needs

There are a few different places you can begin your survival journey in Sons of the Forest, and if you don't like where you start, you can simply restart the game. For the best head start, we'd recommend beginning a run where you crash land in the forest. It's right in the middle of the action and conveniently located next to some of the most impor...

Yes, this is a given as it's a survival game, but it's easy to get carried away with exploring and building and forget to keep an eye on your levels. It's best to generally avoid relying on energy drinks, ramen, cereals, and whatever else you might find in campsites and underground bunkers. Save these for when you're desperate or are exploring underground cave systems, as some of these can take a while to get through and you'll find plenty of foes to go up against.

The best way to look after your basic needs is to use the island and its creatures to your full advantage - especially when you're just generally exploring. In the first few days, we'd recommend you catch animals, spend time fishing, forage, and find key items to set you up for the rest of the game. Winter arrives on day 10, so you'll want to have plenty of food and water stocked up to see you through.

Speaking of those key items, the one you'll want to find to help with your thirst is a 3D Printed Flask, and in order to do this, you need to find the 3D Printers. We mentioned the forest as a potential starting point for this game, and the reason for this is it's close to one of the 3D Printers.

There are four of these on the island (show on the map above). Crafting the flask will cost 100ml of Printer Resin. Luckily, enough resin can usually be found in the same room as the printer, or in the nearby storage rooms. Prioritize getting the flask, then fill it up at a freshwater source. You can monitor how much water is in your flask by opening your crafting menu (or inventory) with I. There's a blue bar underneath the flask that shows you how full it is.

Instead of just cooking food, you can cure a lot of it in one go. This can take some time, but if you get a few Drying Racks crafted early on, you can start to fill these up. These only require 13 Sticks to make, so ask Kelvin to help you out and collect some sticks for you. Make Stick Storage and ask him to fill it up, so you can quickly craft plenty of Drying Racks, and other useful storage structures.

If you want to fish, head to the water before winter comes and craft yourself a spear using 2 Sticks, Duct Tape, and your Utility Knife. Equip the spear, aim it at the water, and jab at fish to catch them. Or, make use of Kelvin again and ask him to collect fish and bring them to you. This option will only appear when you're near water, as the commands for Kelvin are situational.

For the first few days, start with a small base or just find shelter that allows you to rest and save regularly. You're going to want to explore and grab some essential equipment, and some places will allow you to rest there - such as the underground bunker where the 3D Printers are. There are also campsites you'll find (that are home to weapons) w...

Use either the pre-built structures or free build to create a small base to start with. For the first few days, you'll see the odd mutant and cannibal, but they tend to just observe you. During this time, you'll want to start collecting some of those GPS locators, storing food, and picking up key items and equipment before you really need to think about building a base. By day 3 or 4, it's time to lay the foundations.

All you really need at the start is:

•A place that's close to trees and water. This will help you stay hydrated and with plenty of trees, you can chop all the logs you need to build a great base.

•Enough room for a bed so you can rest and save. You can just create a small house, or use the pre-made design for the log cabin.

•Some shelves. So you can store food, meds, and other bits you've collected on your travels

•Storage racks. These can go outside, but get yourself a form of every storage rack from logs to bones, stones, and sticks

A lot of the weapons in Sons of the Forest are located in the western and northern parts of the island. On the west side alone, you can get two guns - the Pistol and the Shotgun. Conserving ammo is key in this game, but the more firepower, the better, and you can give these to Virginia.

The Pistol can be found in a raft by following the GPS locator that's on the western side of the island, in the water. To get the Shotgun, you'll need the Shovel, and then you can go pick it up from a grave that you need to dig up in the northeast.

We'd also recommend picking up the Modern Axe when you first start the game, as although it's fairly slow in its movements, it can do significant damage. Aim at a mutant's head, and you can knock it off clean. We've marked the location of the Modern Axe on the map below, but you'll be looking for a campsite, where the Modern Axe sits in the body of the person left behind.

Take a look at All Weapons and Attachments in the game, and if you want detailed information on how to get the Shotgun and Pistol, visit the pages below:

    •How to Find the Shotgun

    •How to Find the Pistol

If you've got the Modern Axe, or crafted yourself a Spear and have begun to venture into the caves, you'll meet mutants down there that you can take down. Once they're dead, you can skin them for Creepy Armor. Each mutant will give you a piece of Creepy Armor, so you can load up until the armor bar (on the left of the health bar) is full.

Once you've got your base established and the cannibals begin to visit, each time you take them out, you'll want to throw their bodies on the fire. This will give you bones that you can store in your Bone Storage, and can craft into armor. It's easier to keep your Armor topped up, because it's simple enough to make or obtain, than it is to keep worrying about eating or taking meds to replenish.

We mentioned the flask above and you'll definitely want to prioritize getting that to make sure you keep yourself hydrated. But that's not the only item you'll want to focus on getting early on. We'd recommend the Rebreather, Zipline Rope Gun, and Shovel from the caves marked on the map below.

You'll find the Rebreather (along with a Stun Gun) in the cave to the north, the Zipline Rope Gun in the cave that's to the west, and the Shovel can be obtained from the cave that's closest to the mountains marked on the map above. Visit them in this order, as the Zipline Rope Gun and Rebreather are needed to get the shovel. Having these three items will allow you to explore more of the island, dig up spots to gain access to underground bunkers (with 3D Printers), and get hold of a Shotgun.

    • Loot every container at the crash site. When you first awaken after the crash at the beginning of Sons Of The Forest, the very first thing you should do is pick up just about everything you possibly can from around the crash site.
    • Use hotkeys to access items quickly. At launch, Sons of the Forest forced players to use their backpack whenever they wanted to swap items. There was a fast way of doing this - holding the "I" key brings up a quick inventory - but you can now also assign hotkeys to your items.
    • Set up your first base near a river. There are several reasons why it's a very good idea to set up camp near a river. Most importantly, it's an easy and limitless supply of fresh water that you can use to slake your thirst.
    • Make a Tent to save your game. There's no autosave feature, so if you want to save your progress in Sons Of The Forest you need to do it manually using a resting area of some sort.
