1. High School English Lessons to Teach: Rhetorical Appeals. When students learn about rhetorical appeals and can identify them in a text, students gain a much stronger understanding of the text, its purpose, and why the author wrote it. Learning about and understanding rhetorical appeals also helps students become stronger writers themselves.
- Embedding Quotes in Writing. One of the first things I teach students is how to embed quotes in their writing. I teach this skill with our short story unit, and I really emphasize how to embed a quote properly.
- Paraphrase, Quote, and Summarize Text. In addition to learning how to properly embed a quote, I also need them to know how to paraphrase and summarize text -and the difference between them.
- Punctuation: Colons and Semicolons. Another one of my most critical high school English lessons I teach my students is about punctuation. My colons and semicolons teaching unit includes a presentation for direct instruction and student materials, including worksheets, assessments, and guides.
- Logical Fallacies. Teaching high schoolers about logical fallacies can be so much fun. After all, there are so many different things you can do with it.
- Read a lot with your students. I was never told by my English Education professors that 1) my students might not like the process of reading and comprehension 2) my students would usually be way behind grade level 3) my students may think they are naturally bad readers.
- Read varied texts. If you are anything like me, you love literature. That may be why you became a teacher. You fell in love with the poems of Langston Hughes, the short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, or novels by Jane Austen.
- Have multiple readings within your instruction. My hubby, an intensive reading and comprehension teacher at a school where only 20% of students are at grade level, reads A LOT with his students.
- Move students around for optimal learning. This strategy for reading and comprehending involves a bit of classroom management. Students don’t have a right to sit wherever they want.
May 14, 2024 · The teaching methods and strategies of old, say, lecturing at a room of high school students for 50 minutes, don’t translate well to the always-connected, oft-disengaged youth of today. This shift requires us, as the professionals, to adjust and adapt our teaching methods and strategies.
