Here is a round-up of resources you can use while teaching homeostasis: 1. AMOEBA SISTERS- This Youtube video may go into a little more depth than biology teachers need to cover, but it’s still a great video. They also have worksheets that accompany the videos on their website. 2.

Jun 1, 2023 · Homeostasis is defined as a state of balance among all body systems. We’ve scoured the archives to find 18 unique homeostasis activity ideas that will captivate your students’ interest and deepen their understanding of this important biological concept. The activities are designed to be interactive and hands-on and are suitable for a range ...
- Make it visual with illustrative diagrams and tables. One way to make the mechanisms underlying homeostasis clear is to use diagrams. A diagram allows you to clearly show the key components of the process, including the regulated variable, sensor, control center, and effector.
- Take the mess out of teaching homeostasis with an endocrine system virtual lab. The endocrine system is a complex body system, featuring multiple pathways and homeostatic mechanisms.
- Engage students with a hands-on homeostasis lab activity. One common example of homeostasis is thermoregulation, or the monitoring and regulation of body temperature.
- Make sure students are prepared with pre-lab preps. Have you ever tried a flipped classroom model? In this model, students complete pre-work before they come to class, leaving in-class time for hands-on activities and discussion.
- Body Temperature Regulation. Demonstrate the body’s capacity to regulate temperature by placing ice packs on students’ arms and measuring their skin temperature to observe how body temperature is maintained within a steady range.
- Sweating and Cooling Experiment. Allow students to engage in physical activity and monitor their sweat production level while learning about the cooling function of sweating on body temperature regulation.
- Breath-Holding Experiment. Have students hold their breath for differing periods, then observe how their bodies respond with an increased heart rate and urge to breathe as they reach their limits.
- Regulation of Blood Sugar Levels. Explore the role of insulin in regulating blood sugar levels by simulating glucose tests with sugar water and test strips designed for educational purposes.
I generally spend about a week on homeostasis. I’ve taught homeostasis in a variety of school schedules—90 minute block classes, 45 minute classes, 50 minute classes, etc. In order to give you a timeline of how I teach homeostasis, I’m going to break down how I teach homeostasis during a week of five classes that are each fifty minutes long.
1. Do a hands-on activity with the body. The human body can be used to understand homeostasis. Two activities you can do with students involve exercise and temperature. In the first activity, students can test their heart rate while resting and after three minutes of exercise. In the second activity, students check their resting heart rate and ...

The teacher gives each group a very brief description of that process. The group members read their description. Identify the stimulus, receptor, integrating center, effector, and response and write these on paper in a list. Ex. Thermoregulation Stimulus= increase in body temperature. The groups now put these components into a flow chart ...
