Jun 18, 2020 · Objectives. To use a metric ruler to measure the dimensions of regular geometric shapes, and to use these measurements to determine the areas of the shapes. To measure the volume of a sample of water using a graduated cylinder and a beaker in order to compare their precision.
Nov 2, 2023 · 1 minute = 60 seconds. Temperature is measured with a thermometer or digital probe. Laboratory thermometers usually have a precision of a half or one degree. Digital temperature probes are available which are more precise than traditional thermometers and can often read to 0.1 o C.
Feb 2, 2024 · In this lab, you will be introduced to some common measuring devices and learn how to use them to obtain correct measurements, each with correct precision. A metric ruler will be used to measure length in centimeters (cm). All measuring devices are subject to error, making it impossible to obtain exact measurements.
- This meter stick is calibrated in centimeters (shown as the numbered major divisions) with a least count of millimeters.
- An example of a meter stick reading. The object's length is measured to be 41.64 cm. (See text for description.) A measurement reading usually has one more significant figure than the least count reading of the scale.
- The vernier caliper. A common instrument used to measure lengths, depths and diameters. (See text for description.) When using a meter stick to measure length, for example, it is necessary to estimate the measurement's final digit (tenths of a millimeter).
- With the jaws closed, this is what a properly zeroed vernier caliper should look like. Click on the image to enlarge it.
Measure the length of the long edge of your lab bench with your chosen device and record your measurement in Table 1. Remember to estimate last digit for correct number of significant figures (sig figs).

Understanding Accuracy and Precision. In experimentation, it’s important to remember what we mean by accuracy and precision. Accuracy is how close your value is to the true value. The problem is you can’t always know what the actual value is.
