Aug 22, 2022 · The Technology. AIS is transmitted on two reserved channels in the marine VHF allocation (87B and 88B). Just like your normal VHF, the range is dependent on antenna height although the AIS signal is more rugged than speed which slightly increases the range. Typically, on a small craft you will pick up big ships up to about 20 miles away.
