The aorta is a cane-shaped artery. It starts in the lower-left chamber of your heart (ventricle). From there, it extends up toward your head a short distance before curving down. The aorta passes through your chest and abdominal cavities and ends at your pelvis.
The aorta originates from the top of the left ventricle of the heart. Oxygenated blood from the heart leaves the left ventricle and travels into the aorta via the aortic valve. The valve contains three leaflets that allow for one-way blood flow through the vessel. The aorta has four main sections.
Oct 30, 2023 · The aorta is the first segment of the systemic arterial circulation, originating directly from the left ventricle of the heart. It is the largest artery in the body consisting of three parts that each has its special characteristics, most notably in their direction and orientation.

Nov 9, 2024 · The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body, carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart to every organ and tissue. It begins at the left ventricle, extends upward through the chest to form an arch, and continues downward, eventually branching into the iliac arteries just above the pelvis.

Apr 21, 2024 · It receives the cardiac output from the left ventricle and supplies the body with oxygenated blood via the systemic circulation. The aorta can be divided into four sections: the ascending aorta, the aortic arch, the thoracic (descending) aorta and the abdominal aorta.

It takes in deoxygenated blood through the veins and delivers it to the lungs for oxygenation before pumping it into the various arteries (which provide oxygen and nutrients to body tissues by transporting the blood throughout the body). The heart is located in the thoracic cavity medial to the lungs and posterior to the sternum.

Blood is pumped from the left ventricle into the aorta and from there branches to all parts of the body. The aorta is an elastic artery, meaning it is able to distend. When the left ventricle contracts to force blood into the aorta, the aorta expands.
