The intake manifold, also known known as the inlet manifold, distributes air to the engine’s cylinders, and on many cars it also holds the fuel injectors. On older cars without fuel injection or with throttle body injection, the manifold takes in the fuel-air mixture from the carburetor/throttle body, to the cylinder heads. The manifold lets ...

The intake manifold is a series of tubes that distributes air coming into the engine. See more Car Engine Pictures. . Brian Stablyk/Photographer's Choice RF/Getty Images . Your car breathes. Yes, you heard that right: Your car breathes, just like you do. It takes in air and it breathes out, well, exhaust. But just as air, particularly the oxygen it contains, is one of the most important ...

Intake Manifold Plenum
The plenum is the large cavity at the top of the manifold. It acts as a reservoir, holding the air until it’s ready togo into the cylinders. The plenum evenly distributes the air to the runners before it passes through the intake valve. The size of the plenum impacts the engine’s performance. Aftermarket manifolds can have a split plenum that can beseparated into two. This design makes it easier to clean the inside of the manifold.
Intake Manifold Runners
The runners are tubes that carry air from the plenum to the intake port on each cylinder head. For fuel-injectedengines, there are ports for the fuel injectors in each runner. Fuel is injected just before the air goes into theintake port. The size of the runners is a critical factor when it comes to engine performance. The width and the length of therunners largely determine where the peak horsepower of the engine is.
Air travels through the intake and the throttle body into the plenum of the intake manifold. The plenum then equallydisperses the air to each of the runners. During the intake stroke, the piston moves down and creates low pressurewithin the cylinder. This sucks the air from the runner (an area of high pressure) into the cylinder. When the intake va...
Prior to 1990, many vehicles had carbureted engines. In these vehicles, fuel is dispersed inside the intake manifoldfrom the carburetor. Therefore, the intake manifold is responsible for delivering the fuel and air mixture to eachcylinder. To prevent the fuel from condensing on the cold walls of the intake manifold, heating is required. This can co...
The design of the intake manifold affects how much air is delivered and how quickly. Everything from the diameter of theopenings to the size and shape of the plenum and runners can alter how and when air is delivered. Performance intake manifolds are equipped with larger plenums and runners for better airflow. Manifolds with a splitplenum allow for...
Apr 24, 2024 · The intake manifold is located atop the engine for air and fuel distribution. It contains a plenum that serves as an air reservoir for even distribution. Individual runners provide dedicated pathways for each cylinder’s air intake. The manifold’s design impacts engine performance, efficiency, and power output.

Jan 2, 2017 · Inlet manifolds are made from aluminium or cast iron, although some cars use plastic manifolds. Sometimes intake manifolds split and develop a leak. If you lift the bonnet and listen to the engine when idling you’ll be able to hear a whistling or hissing noise, and the engine itself may idle roughly or stall when idling.
