When the police report is retrieved from the safe-deposit box, Avery learns the house on Hawthorne Island was soaked in gas by Toby. Lightning struck, accidentally lighting the whole place on fire.
Avery has recovered from her injuries and is in her bedroom, preparing for her first day back to school, when she hears someone in the secret passage adjoining her room. It’s Thea. Avery follows Thea into the passage. Then, someone grabs Avery from behind and puts a cloth over her nose and mouth.
At the conclusion of The Inheritance Games, Avery discovered that Tobias Hawthorne’s son, Tobias Hawthorne II or “Toby”—who had long been presumed deceased—is alive. Avery knew him as a man without a home named “Harry,” with whom she used to play chess.
Tobias Hawthorne accomplished what he wanted to achieve by bringing Avery to Hawthorne house, and the threat of the Blakes was neutralized. There’s no reason she couldn’t have given them some of their intended inheritance.
The only thing stopping himself from throwing his life away in one of his games is apparently Avery, which is messed up because that isn't even the bare minimum, it's a mandate. He isn't in a relationship if he's dead. He doesn't fix this issue of his and he doesn't even reflect on it.
