Faster discs cut into the wind with less effort and are best when throwing up wind. Slower discs take more power to throw upwind, but they’re easier to throw more accurately and may actually go farther downwind. High speed discs are not recommended for beginners as they require more power to fly properly.
A fast moving disc turns because lift is high which creates a negative angle of attack, a nose down pitching moment, and high speed turn.
Lightweight discs are usually recommended for kids, women and beginner-level players, who tend to have slower arm speed. But if you are an experienced player, you should look for heavier discs because they tend to have better stability and the tendency to maintain the desired flight path.
If you have a disc made so that more air passes over it than under it so that the nose is exposed to more downward force, the right edge will go down. This turns the disc right and makes it understable.
Ratings are from -5 to +1. Lower ratings of -5 to -2 contribute to understability. A disc with a -5 rating offers the least resistance therefore will turn the easiest while a +1 rating is most resistant to turning. Discs rated -5 to -2 make good roller discs and are considered understable.
These discs tend to have a COP close to the COM. On the other hand, wide-rimmed distance drivers have higher rim-to-flight plate mass ratio. Thus, they have a COP farther from the COM. This difference is one factor that allows them to fly farther when thrown with proper velocity and angle.
Perhaps the most common culprit of discs going hard left is the player’s release angle. Most of us tend to naturally have what we call in disc golf a “hyzer” release. This means the disc is tilted down and left when you throw it and basic physics will tell you that the disc will fly on the angle it is thrown.
Flippy (flip) – A term for a very understable disc. One that has a tendency to turn to the right when thrown with a flat RHBH throw. Foot fault – A violation of PDGA rules that stipulate where a foot may be placed when throwing or putting.
Generally, understable discs are the best option for beginners with lower arm speed because they are simply easier to throw farther. Because these discs require less power and less release accuracy, they are more forgiving and give newer players more distance.
Functions of a Disc’s Flight Discs usually become more understable with wear. Weight of disc – The lighter the disc, the easier it is to throw at a high speed per its weight. Because speed is faster compared to weight, lighter discs usually fly less stable.
