Mar 8, 2023 · In art, the reflection in a mirror becomes a portal into an “anti-world” — a more truthful version of our own. Hence, the symbolic use of mirrors in art has often been to expand the limits of the subject matter, to reveal something that would otherwise lie out of sight. Here I explore the different roles of mirrors in painting.
- Roy Lichtenstein. Known as a key figure in the American pop art movement, Roy Lichtenstein’s work is characterised by his unique stylisation of comics and advertisements.
- Michelangelo Pistoletto. Beginning in 1961 Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto began making what would become his most iconic works, his Quadri specchianti (mirror paintings).
- Yayoi Kusama. Ubiquitous on any art-lover’s Instagram account is the work of Yayoi Kusama. Her series of Infinity Rooms, deemed such by their seemingly endless dimensions through the use of mirrored walls, have caught the attention of her audiences since 1965.
- Josiah McElheny. Fusing art and design Josiah McElheny uses mirrored cases and reflective sculptural objects to create a seemingly endless array of these appealingly curvilinear forms.

Oct 18, 2019 · By using physical mirrors within a sculptural installation, Bourgeois creates multiple perspectives and reflections that not only refract the rest of the piece, but the audience themselves. In this sense, the mirror moves from the singular realm of symbolism, to become an interactive object that allows viewers to become temporarily part of the work.
Jun 3, 2020 · At first we see the back of a man’s head in front of the mirror. Upon closer inspection, the reflection is also the back of a man’s head. However, the book is reflected correctly, unlike the man. The title is ironic because the mirror does, in fact, reproduce the same image. This painting relates back to traditional painting and original work.
