Like the Presto card, users must tap the Presto ticket on a Presto reader when entering a TTC bus, streetcar or subway station. Unlike the Presto card, the Presto ticket is valid only for TTC services; it cannot be used for any other regional service providers or on TTC bus routes operating outside of the City of Toronto, such as those in York Region (north of Steeles Avenue) and Mississauga ...
All those agencies except GO, TTC and OC Transpo share transfers. You do still tap when getting on later vehicles, the card takes care of it and the reader shows time remaining. So you can ride a Bramptonion, Mississaugan, and Oakvillian bus all on one fare. The TTC does their own transfers, but doesn't share with the others like that.
The TTC has chosen to use this opportunity to install new fare gates, and this makes the work more complex than simply fitting a Presto reader onto existing turnstiles. Retrofitting the technology to vehicles requires wiring for power and control systems, as well as providing an interface to the on-board GPS units.
Starting tomorrow, Sat., Sept. 25, customers will see new screen images on all PRESTO card readers on TTC buses and streetcars. The new screens will be more informative and include how much the customer paid or if they are transferring, their remaining balance, and whether they are paying with a monthly pass.
