I finally got to demo the Empyreans and Elites today (HIFIbuys Atlanta) along with a few other kilobuck and TOTL headphones such as the lcdx, Arya, and Focal Stellia - and after trying them out for around an hour or so, I’m kind of underwhelmed.

The very obvious mid-bass bloat has always been the dealbreaker for me with the original Empyrean and to a slightly lesser degree, the Empyrean Elite.
The Empyrean is a jack of all trade’s kind of versatile headphone that has superb bass and vocals. Timbre is on point, and very natural sounding. With the suede pads the soundstage is very wide (not HD800 wide but not too far off either) with acceptable imaging.

I am ready to share my thoughts and review the Meze Empyreans I received not too long ago. First off I listened to 95% of the time with Ifi Zen Can. I used the Zen Can over the Topping A90D because the Xbass brought these headphones more alive and unlocked the mid to sub-bass for me.

Nov 30, 2023 · Pros: The best Meze headphone to date. Natural, fun, emotional sound. Dynamic and plentiful, but not overdone bass. Lush, rich, smooth midrange. Great dynamics in the treble without an ounce of sibilance. Satisfying detail and accurate imaging. Top-of-the-line design, comfort, accessories and build quality. Cons: The soundstage could be larger.
