As a general rule, you should add a layer of soil that is about 1-2 inches thick at the bottom of the tank, and cover it with a layer of gravel or sand to prevent it from floating.
Every time a plant uproots you get a cloud of soil and an ammonia spike. Potential for dragonfly larve and other pests or chemicals. I guess it’s necessary if you need to make a 400 gallon planted tank or something, but for anything less than 150 gallons, I’d bite the bullet and go with aquasoil or some other kind of aquarium specific substrate.
Sep 16, 2010 · The soil layer can become anaerobic, which is a very very bad thing. Anaerobic basically means that the soil isn't oxygenated enough, and the bad bacteria takes over. Bubbles rising from the substrate and a strong sulfur/rotten egg smell is a dead giveaway. Prevented by: Using 2 inches or less of soil mixture, and 1.5 inches or less of gravel.

If your plants require a little more nutrients your planted tank will do better with commercial soil designed for aquarium use. It can be done with inert substrates too, but you’d need to dose root tabs AND liquid fertilizers for optimal growth.
