- Instructors train approximately eight to ten dogs from start to finish. After the four-month training cycle, instructors train the dogs with their new partners for 25 days (or 18 days for returning handlers).

New students stay on campus for 3-½ weeks; students who are here for their second or subsequent Seeing Eye dog stay for 2-½ weeks. Students arrive on a Monday and spend the first few days getting acquainted with the surroundings and their instructors.
The average working life for a Seeing Eye dog is 7 – 8 years. Many Seeing Eye dogs have worked to the ages of 10 or 11. Retired Seeing Eye dogs may be kept as pets, given to a friend or relative as a pet, or returned to The Seeing Eye and re-homed through our dog adoption program.
We train Seeing Eye dogs to guide blind people, instruct blind people in their proper use, handling, and care, and conduct and support research on canine health and development.

After graduation, students return home with full ownership of their Seeing Eye dog. Follow-up support — on the phone, online, or through at-home visits — is provided for the lifetime of the partnership.
Jul 1, 2024 · Many Seeing Eye dog trainers enter the field through an apprenticeship with either a guide dog association or training school. These apprenticeship programs often last as long as three years, during which time you are given supervised, hands-on training with the guide dogs.
