The game checks every mod from the workshop for updates, and basically redownloads them all each time. The more mods you have, the longer it'll spend downloading them all. If you want mods to instantly load up, go to your l4d2 directory under Steam > Steamapps > common > Left 4 dead 2 > left4dead2 > addons > Workshop
All you should have to do is subscribe on the Steam workshop. Once you load up the game they will install in seconds. Then click on the Mods tab on the title page. From there you can add and remove mods. Sounds like one of the mods is messing up your game completely.
Dec 20, 2017 · It just takes a loooong time, the mods "download" like any normal patch through the steam launcher, but the installation process can take 15+ minutes for larger mods
It depends on your computer's hardware. For my gaming laptop it takes a few minutes with all the DLC, CC and mods. I have all of them and I play with them all enabled. It takes me like maybe 3 minutes total to launch the game, select my save and load into the save I selected. I am usually playing a family that has an enormous mansion as well.

Apr 6, 2014 · Loading subscribed mods is simple, but you can only load one at a time using that method. To manually load more mods, you need to drag and drop the mods you want on to the executable file (or a shortcut to the executable).

15GB of mods for me, the game is on a hard drive with a SATA SSD cache. Takes about 1 minute to load to the main menu, and another 45 seconds to resume a relatively new save game.
