Oct 18, 2016 · Right now, the surface of Mars is now extremely arid because the air is too thin for liquid water to last for long. The red planet’s atmospheric pressure is just roughly 1/100th of Earth’s and in such thin air water easily boils. However, dark, narrow lines on martian slopes hint that water could run downthese formations regularly.

Mars, along with Earth and Venus, resides in or near the "habitable zone" of our solar system, where liquid water could exist. However, each of these planets has evolved under vastly different ...
2 days ago · Some perchlorates have been shown to keep liquids from freezing even when conditions are as cold as minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 70 Celsius). On Earth, naturally produced perchlorates are concentrated in deserts, and some types of perchlorates can be used as rocket propellant. Perchlorates have previously been seen on Mars.
Jan 26, 2022 · But two scientists studying data that MRO has accumulated at Mars over the last 15 years have found evidence that reduces that timeline significantly: Their research reveals signs of liquid water on the Red Planet as recently as 2 billion to 2.5 billion years ago, meaning water flowed there about a billion years longer than previous estimates.

Sep 28, 2015 · NASA. These dark, narrow, 100 meter-long streaks called recurring slope lineae flowing downhill on Mars are inferred to have been formed by contemporary flowing water. Recently, planetary scientists detected hydrated salts on these slopes at Hale crater, corroborating their original hypothesis that the streaks are indeed formed by liquid water.
3 days ago · NASA ’s Opportunity rover has found convincing evidence that large quantities of water were once present in at least one location on Mars. “The rocks here were once soaked in liquid water,” said Steve Squyres, principle investigator for the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission, referring to the bedrock outcrop near the rover’s landing site in Meridiani Planum.

Mar 29, 2024 · The rover has arrived at an area that may show evidence liquid water flowed on this part of Mars for much longer than previously thought. NASA’s Curiosity rover has begun exploring a new region of Mars, one that could reveal more about when liquid water disappeared once and for all from the Red Planet’s surface.
