   Oct 9, 2020 · I was under the impression that Atari 800 games came in three forms: Cart Files - ROM/COM/XEX/CART. Disk Files - ATR/ATX. Tape Files - CAS. But then I stumbled upon some COM games that (according to AtariMania) were never released on cartridge: Air Support, Desmond's Dungeons, Encounter, Ghost Chaser, Zeppelin.

   How do I make ATR files of non copy-protected disks?

   • You can make ATR files of non copy-protected disks using a real Atari drive and an SIO2PC cable/software. Just set it up so there are two drives -- the real drive and a virtual drive with an empty ATR image. Then do a regular DOS disk copy.

   Can a 8 bit Atari a8rawconv read the backside of a disk?

   • Just flip the disk over and turn off the index sensor requirement. A8RawConv should be able to do this automatically. The SuperCard Pro hardware will read the backside of the disk without a reference to the index mark (which isn't used on 8 bit Atari disks anyways). Just read 2 revs and parse the data.    • The Atari 400 and 800 systems ran a Memo Pad when you turned the machine on without loading a program or having a cartridge inserted. The BASIC cart was packed into the box. All the XL and XE models came with BASIC built into the machine.

   • I mean, certainly Atari has EXE files, but they could also be called OBJ, COM, or pretty much anything else you wanted, but once people started using emulators or their PCs, or SIO2PC devices and the like and storing the files on their PCs, this just became a better way to differentiate. 2 months later...

   How do I copy an Atari image to a virtual drive?

   • Just set it up so there are two drives -- the real drive and a virtual drive with an empty ATR image. Then do a regular DOS disk copy. Alternatively, you can use a "Prosys-style" cable with software that can read/write from an Atari drive directly without the need for the Atari computer to be in the mix.
