Jun 7, 2024 · For multi-day trips, you’ll need 50 to 70 liters of backpack volume, but if you go ultralight, use compressible gear that doesn’t take up a lot of space, or can resupply frequently, like on a thru-hike, you might be able to get with a lower volume pack in that range.
- Backpacking Gear. A backpacking pack that holds 30–50 liters is about right for overnight trips; go with packs in the upper end of that range if you’ll be out for two or three nights.
- Backcountry Kitchen. Backpacking stove. Fuel. Cookset (with pot grabber) Dishes/bowls. Eating Utensils. Mug/cup. Biodegradable soap. Small quick-dry towel. Collapsible water container.

I would aim more towards a 40-50 liter pack like the Osprey Rook 50 Liter for a 3 day trip. You can carry a bigger pack if you’re on a tight budget, but that adds a lot of unnecessary weight.
