I have therefore made some averages, based on what I’ve heard from publishers and agents at children’s book events, and from research and reading.

  3. What about those that consist of 4 books, or 5 books, or 6, or 7, or even just 2 books? I’ve been wondering about this for quite a while now. I did discover, a while back, the term for a series of 4 books (because my personal favorite series has 4 books in it): a “tetralogy”.

Tier three books are books that are not necessarily written to focus on a specific math skill, but could easily be used to make connections to math.

  7. I would use inclusion-exclusion. Count the total ways to distribute the books. Subtract three times the number of ways to give them to a specific pair. But you have subtracted the ways to gove them all to one child twice (paired once with each of the others) so add them in once.
