Jul 23, 2024 · Walruses, seals and sea lions are all pinnipeds, a clade of carnivorous semi-aquatic mammals which are collectively known as seals. This is a diverse group with many different Families, making it quite confusing when trying to distinguish between these different animals.
Seals and sea lions are very similar marine carnivores, with a few handy differences. If you can get over the common naming fiasco for the eared seals, it’s as simple as checking for external flaps on the side of the head, but there are also other handy differences to know about.
Seals are part of the Phocidae family, also known as “true seals” or “earless seals”. On the other hand, sea lions belong to the Otariidae family, which includes “eared seals” and “fur seals”. These classifications hint at some of the key differences we’ll explore further.
