Fire protection in Los Angeles County started in the late 1800s with the formation of two separate departments. The first department, the County Forester, was charged with protecting natural resources and responsible for planting and maintaining Department landscapes. The second department, the County Fish and Game Warden, was then assigned the responsibility as County Fire Warden. On May 8, 1911, the Board created the County of Los Angeles Board of Forestry, which later became the Los Angeles County Forestry Department.
In 1919, over 135,000 acres of wildland fires blackened Los Angeles County prompting the merging of these two departments, which resulted in greater emphasis on fire suppression, creating the County Forester and Fire Warden (F&FW). Between September 1923 and 1925, 31 separate fire districts were formed, the first two being in Signal Hill and Santa Monica Canyon. Several local volunteer fire departments were closed or amalgamated into the LACoFD upon its formation, including:

Jan 31, 2016 · Although no firemen were assigned regularly to these two vessels, during emergencies, firefighters from land-based fire stations would board the tugs and go to work. Los Angeles purchased its first fireboat, the “Aeolian,” in 1915. This 20-foot long, wooden fireboat, believed to have been built in Seattle, went into service in 1916.
