Apr 5, 2021 · There are more than 700 named characters in the Harry Potter books, so even some major faces had to be left out of the films due to time constraints. While most of the characters important to the plot make repeat appearances throughout the series, there are a few who either merged with other characters or were left out entirely.

As Harry Potter fans are well aware, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is home to plenty of ghosts, including one for each school house: Nearly Headless Nick, the Grey Lady, the Fat Friar, and the Bloody Baron represent Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin, respectively.
- Winky. Fans of the Harry Potter films are familiar with Dobby, the high-spirited house elf who escapes servitude to become a trailblazing free elf. But there are plenty of other house elves in the book series who were unfortunately left out of the films.
- Ludo Bagman. One of the most glaring omissions from the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie is that of Ludo Bagman. As the Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports, Bagman is responsible for organizing the Quidditch World Cup, which Harry and his friends attend before they return to Hogwarts, and the Triwizard Tournament, the multi-school event that dominates the subsequent school year.
- The Gaunts. During the sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry and Dumbledore explore Voldemort's heritage, childhood, and adolescence, via the Pensieve.
- Peeves. There are no end of ghosts in the Harry Potter books and many of them crop up in the movies, with John Cleese playing Nearly Headless Nick and Kelly MacDonald taking on the crucial role of The Grey Lady.
- The Gaunts. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was commended for adding emotional depth to our three teenage heroes, but all that romance and heartbreak came at a price.
- Augusta Longbottom. Neville Longbottom's grandmother took him in after his parents, Frank and Alice, were tortured to madness by The Death Eaters. Frank and Alice were aurors and members of the Order of the Phoenix, yet also never made an appearance in the films.
- The Muggle Prime Minister. Another tragedy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the omission of that brilliant opening scene where the Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, visited his muggle counterpart.
