Nov 29, 2017 · From 2006 to 2016, employment in the services sector grew 12.0% to 13.7 million. At the same time, employment in the goods-producing sector fell 5.3% to 3.5 million. In May 2016, almost four out of five workers (79.7%) worked in the services sector, up from about 76.1% of the workforce in 1996.
Among people 55 and older, women had the largest employment increase in 2016, up 90,000 (+5.6%) compared with 57,000 (+2.8%) for men. The unemployment rate for men in this group rose 0.5 percentage points to 6.7%, as employment grew at a slower pace than their labour force.
