Jan 31, 2023 · Actually, the first Mister Donut in Japan opened in 1971! The chain was begun in the U.S. in the 1950s, but was later sold to Dunkin’ Donuts and now only one shop remains in the U.S.. My grandfather worked for them, and traveled to Japan at one point to check on how the franchise business was going, probably in the late 1970s or early 1980s.

However, Mister Donut is still alive and kicking overseas, and is the largest donut chain in Japan. We braved the cold and took a trip to our local shop this past weekend.

(about 1–2 minutes walk from the station) It costs 1200 yen per person (roughly 12 dollars) and you have 1 hour to eat from the moment you make your first order.
