The COVID-19 pandemic brought sharper awareness to hunger in California, as many Americans experienced food insecurity for the first time. In the last year record inflation drove food prices up 4.5%.
No Californian should go hungry, yet hunger remains at tragic levels. Despite many policy interventions, 21.2% of California households – more than 8 million people – still report food insecurity. This is more than double pre-pandemic rates.
