Due to the strength of its port, the island prospered in the late 19th Century, boasting tremendous wealth as the third richest city in the country. As cotton was shipped out, people poured in. Galveston was the gateway to the United States for an estimated 300,000 immigrants. It was Texas’ most populous city in the 1870s and 1880s.
