Google's founders have never cared much about the stock market and have their own vision for the company regardless of profit incentives. It is even in their mission statement of "Don't be evil". Reason why they have thrown away money into weird unlikely tech like Moon Escalators, and a bunch of projects that were never greenlit or never saw the light of day at Google X, etc.
