- Rolling Stops. One of the most common mistakes to avoid during your DMV road test is making incomplete stops. Many drivers slow down, but do not actually come to a complete stop during the road test.
- Improper Lane Changing. It’s not terribly difficult to signal your intention to change lanes, then check your mirrors and blind spot before changing lanes, however people fail to do it all the time, including during the DMV test.
- Lack of Steering Control. Although demonstrating confidence behind the wheel is important during your test, don’t be so confident that you drive one-handed.
- Distracted Driving. Keep your cell phone and stereo off during your driving test. This is common sense, but it is surprising how many people are thinking or fidgeting with other things while taking their test.

- Part Two: Maneuverability Test
- Step One
- Step Two
During the driving test, the test administrator will ask you to perform the following tasks smoothly and without hesitation: 1. Stopping and starting 2. Turning around and backing up 3. Making left and right turns 4. Giving hand signals or using vehicle turn signals 5. Driving in the correct lane 6. Maintaining a safe following distance
The maneuverability test includes two steps: going forward and backwards through markers. Each step is to be completed in one continuous motion. The test administrator will deduct points if you stop to check progress, bump the markers, or misjudge the stopping distance. You will automatically fail if you run over or knock down a marker.
First, you will drive forward through a box formed by four markers (see BMV's diagram below). The test administrator will tell you to steer to the right or left of the "point" marker. Afterwards, they will direct you to drive straight ahead and stop when the rear bumper of your car is even with the "point" marker and parallel with the course.
From your stopped position at the end of Step One, you will back past the "point" marker. Straighten your car and back through the box and come to a stop—with your front bumper even with the two rear markers and parallel with the course. If you stop your vehicle because of striking a marker, you'll need to go back to start and begin again. To compl...
We recommend arriving 15 minutes before your scheduled test time. After check-in, your licensed driver will drive you both around to the side of the DMV where you'll see marked lanes to wait for your road test. An examiner will come out and meet you, verify the registration and insurance for the vehicle and ask for your permit.
There is no cap on the maximum number of times you can take the driving test in Ohio. However, keep these in mind: Applicants under 18 must wait two days before attempting to retake it.
If you pass – Go to a Deputy Registrar License Agency to purchase a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) within 60 days of passing the test (see TIPIC information on the next page). If you fail – You must wait one day before retesting.
