After “The Losers” and “Eleventh Holiday” established him as a serious writer and created an audience for him, he began writing novels. His first novel, The Big Season , came out in 1962. This was followed by two works that won New Zealand Literary Fund Awards of Achievement: A Special Flower (1965) and In My Father's Den (1972).
