- Keep any original packaging that makes sense. This was front of my mind as I went along, particularly because the bulk of what I was organizing were holiday decorations!
- Invest in smart storage solutions. Original packaging is not always the best option, however! If you don’t have the original packaging or if you feel it’s too bulky or just not practical, buying smart storage items can be a good idea too.

- Assemble Shoe Storage. The Merrythought created an open shoe storage closet where there once was none by using affordable wood crates. Painting some white and leaving others natural, stacking them both horizontally and vertically to stagger the height, and hanging large round coat and bag hooks on the wall above turns this into a simple landing pad for an entryway or mud room that comes together in a flash.
- Create a Home Cloffice. Ursula Carmona of Home Made By Carmona turned a living room office into a home cloffice with this DIY project. The back wall and desk are painted in the same shade of dark blue to add depth to the small space, and the shelves are styled with books and objects so that it's attractive to look at when the double doors are left open.
- Build an Open Closet. If you live in an older home, you may find yourself without a closet, even in a large bedroom. In this closet-free bedroom designed by Lea Johnson for Emily Henderson Design, the corner was turned into an open closet thanks to the addition of a bracketed shelf that includes a shoe storage shelf on top and a clothes rod on the bottom.
