This first one’s a pretty big one, a complete stylistic overhaul. Create a reggae cover of a pop song, a bluesy version of a folk song or convert jazz standards into beastly death-metal tracks! Your main effect is achieved instantly in that the cover version is going to be automatically quite different from the original. You can also use the conven...
Simply put, what can you change about the song’s intro or lack of an intro? If it doesn’t have one, try adding one (and perhaps one that’s quite different to the first verse and a feature in its own right). If the song does have an intro, try removing it and beginning the song smack bang on verse 1. Or again, you can lengthen it, or make it more of...
Another one that’s based on a pretty simple principle, but you need to be aware of the effect your tempo change will have on your cover. Tempo can be very closely attached to genre and style. So doubling the speed of the original is certainly going to dramatically change it, but how does that sit with the overall context? If you’re planning a mello...

If the first 4 beats of your melody use these 4 notes — C E G F, you’ll find that it makes sense to choose C, even if the F note is the “odd man out”.
- Major or Minor. The first decision you need to make will likely be the easiest: Should your song start on a major chord or a minor chord? If you are writing a melancholic ballad, the answer’s likely minor.
- What’s the Key? The easiest way to write a song is to do so in the key that naturally suits your singing voice. If you already have lyrics and/or a melody for your song, sing it.
- Popular Chord Progressions. There are thousands of different chord progressions to choose from, but there are a few that come up time and time again, particularly in pop songs.
- Does it Match the Melody? As you play your chords and sing the lyrics, do the movements of your vocal line match the chords? You may have to adapt or create a new melody so that they are in sync.

Sep 1, 2020 · My favorite thing on acoustic guitar covers is the sound of open strings ringing out to create a fresh, airy, and peaceful vibe. Most pop songs use barre or Jimi Hendrix-style chords that make for a more rhythmic/controlled sound on electric.
