Aug 22, 2024 · In this article, we’ll look at the link between language and comprehension, why reading comprehension is an important skill for autistic children to develop, and how parents and educators can help autistic children improve this skill.
The steps presented in the following paragraphs provide ways in which general educators can overtly observe the students’ comprehension of the text. These steps will also demonstrate how general educators can teach students with ASD to comprehend daily reading texts at a basic level.
Reading comprehension is often a concern for the teachers of students with autism. The comprehension strategies described in this article may help some students gain comprehension skills and improve their ability to read and communicate about written material.
If you want to know how to teach an autistic child to read, there are many different literacy activities designed to teach sight words, spelling, and vocabulary, encourage WH questions and answers, and develop reading comprehension skills.
Ask concrete leading questions to help them make the connections. Have the child retell what they’ve read. They can draw a picture, make a collage, turn it into a comic strip, or act it out. (Act it out with them!) Listen to an audiobook with your child or read to them. Then, ask questions and help them make connections.
