Dead Island 2 is the long-awaited sequel from Deep Silver Dambuster Studios. This time, the zombie outbreak has moved to Los Angeles, and a new group of Slayers is tasked with battling through the hordes of undead. On this page, you'll find an overview of the plot synopsis, a short introduction to the Slayers, as well as basic gameplay features you can expect to encounter as you get started.
Click the links below to jump to the following sections:
Not at all—you don’t need to have played Dead Island or any of the previous installments in the franchise to enjoy the zombie-slashing fun of Dead Island 2. That being said, some elements of the game will undoubtedly feel familiar to returning players (and there might even be a familiar face).
Nevertheless, there is an array of brand-new zombie types to encounter, changes to co-op, a new skill system, abilities, and a roster of new Slayers to get acquainted with.
Dead Island 2 is set in Los Angeles, or Hell-A, in the midst of a zombie outbreak. While the virus sweeps through the streets of ten explorable districts, we see the playable slayers hop onboard an aircraft in an attempt to escape. It's not long before it becomes apparent that the infected are already on board, and the plane is brought down immediately.
As one of the only survivors of the plane crash, your slayer will have to make it through a number of locations from Bel Air to film studios and sewers, in order to get news about the evacuation and any potential vaccines. You'll find plenty of survivors along the way, opening up Side Quests for you to complete and additional stories to get lost in. The more you explore, the more you'll learn about Hell-A by finding Collectibles that range from notes to weapons and audio clips of life before the outbreak.
In the sections below, we'll take you through the most important basic features you should know before you start your game. You'll find information on choosing the right Slayer for you, weapons, exploration, and more.
Before you can even choose your Slayer, you'll be taken through the cutscene mentioned above where the playable characters attempt to escape Los Angeles. Soon after, the character selection screen appears and you'll be presented with the six playable Slayers, which are:
•Jacob
•Bruno
•Carla
•Dani
•Ryan
When you first start exploring Hell-A, you’ll be able to take out zombies one by one, whether they’re wandering around on their lonesome or feasting on flesh in small groups. Hordes will only really appear in the first few missions if you set off alarms in cars or buildings. When you get further into the game, that's when you can expect to see the number of zombies you need to wipe out increase significantly.
With that in mind, your choice of Weapons will become important. There are multiple melee weapons available, as well as a few guns. Weapons are available across six tier types, which are:
•Improvised
•Common
•Uncommon
•Rare
Dead Island 2 says goodbye to the Skill Tree and hello to Skill Cards. These cards are unlocked or found as you play through the game and are divided into four categories:
•Abilities
•Survivor
•Slayer
•Numen
Your Skill Deck allows you to move cards around to use different combat moves and gain additional bonuses. Found cards can be obtained from looting or killing zombies, while unlocked cards will be given to you as you level up and finish main story missions. Some cards will only be available to specific slayers, so Dani and Jacob, Carla and Ryan, and Bruno and Amy share unique cards.
As well as this, there are specific Autophage Skill Cards. Equipping these increases your Autophage Level, which means your Slayer will start to give in to the virus. This leads to various boosts such as Health, Damage, and Attack Speed, but comes with side effects like a reduction in Peak Health, no Health Regeneration, and food and drink doing less to help you recover health.
Playing around with the Autophage cards is all about trying to get the right balance, where the positive outcomes outweigh the negative side effects. You'll also see that Autophage and Fury Mode are connected. Fury Mode will build as you slay zombies or take energy drinks. You can unleash this to go on a rampage and tear zombies apart. The higher your Autophage level is, the quicker your Fury Mode will replenish.
The game is semi-open-world, so although you'll have your objective markers pushing you along the main story missions, you can go off and explore on your own. There are lots to discover this way, such as Weapons and Collectibles, including some that will trigger Side Quests.
You should start exploring thoroughly from the first mission, to get your hands on everything from Blueprints to Journals. But, the game is designed for you to keep revisiting districts and go back and forth. To make it easier, you might want to wait until you've unlocked Fast Travel before you really start exploring.
Fast Travel is unlocked when you reach the Tap to Reveal area, where you'll be able to dart around using the big red in-game maps. In each district, you'll find Fuse Boxes and Lockboxes.
•Fuse Boxes can only be opened using Fuses purchased from a Vendor. You can carry a max of 3 Fuses at a time, and they cost $1500. However, don't open them all at the start of the game! Weapons level up with you, so the later you open these, the better the weapon will be inside.
There aren't just the main story missions and Side Quests to complete, there are also a huge 84 Challenges for you to tick off along the way. Before you even start the game, you’ll be able to see the Challenges available to you from the Main Menu.
These are divided into the following categories:
•Blueprint Challenges - 7 in total to complete. These range from inflicting status effects to attacking with certain weapon types, or using specific attacks to complete.
•Combat Challenges - 26 in total to complete. These range from taking down specific zombies, to equipped Autophage cards and causing environmental damage to complete.
•Exploration Challenges - 7 in total to complete. These range from traveling to every zone to opening lockboxes and collecting Skill Cards to complete.
•Survivor Challenges - 10 in total to complete. These range from dismantling weapons to fabricating mods, and collecting loot to use in fabrication to complete.
