I uploaded a .docx document to Google Docs so that my team could edit it using "suggesting mode" then downloaded it again as a .docx, and now all of the text is contained in many little frames or boxes that only appear when you select that segment of text, they have a little tab with 3 dots on the left hand side.

To remove these boxes from the entire document (and keep the text in them), use Control + A (select all), right-click anywhere, then select "Remove Content Control".
